Company
Pictured to the left is Johson & Cheney Lumber and Coal Company as it was when it was purchased by Alfred Christensen and his partner Robert Luehrs in 1923. These two men had a strong desire to have their own business.
The business was located between the Burlington Northern and the Union Pacific railroad tracks on South Main Street where it remains today.
The business was renamed Luehrs-Christensen Lumber & Coal Company. During the Depression years, there was no lumber sold. In 1931, the lumber company burned to the ground. The partners were not discouraged. They rebuilt the business as pictured to the right.
In 1943, Alfred bought out his partner’s interest in the company. The company was renamed Christensen Lumber & Coal. A few years later, coal was dropped from inventory and the company was then known as Christensen Lumber Co.
The building and grounds had many changes over the years as the company evolved and grew. In 1952 and 1972 major remodeling of the facility was done as shown to the left.
In 1999, interior remodeling produced an extensive showroom inside the 201 So. Main facility. The exterior was also updated as shown to the right.
Christensen Lumber Inc. has remained a family business over the years. Alfred brought his son, David, into the business. David was CEO of the company for many years after his father’s retirement. David’s son, Tom, started in the business at an early age and is now CEO after his father’s retirement.
Christensen Lumber Inc. has grown over the years. In 1993, a full service millwork was opened at 714 S Main. Since then, storage sheds have been built at that location where many of the building materials are staged. Expansion and relocation of the business was completed in August of 2004 this site, shown to the left, now houses all the departments in one location at 714 S. Main. This central location also houses a pre-hung door shop, rail road unloading dock and a 40,000 sf component plant which was completed in 2007.
Christensen Lumber Inc. has been a major force in the Omaha building market. In 1998, a showroom was established at 17927 Pierce Plaza in the Oak Tree Shopping Center in Omaha. The showroom has interactive displays of windows, doors, and many other materials needed in building a home. It contains office space for Christensen Lumber’s Omaha sales representatives.
Christensen Lumber’s mission statement reflects what the company strives to achieve.
“To be the best customer service driven supplier of building materials.”
